Emily Lazo, 87, South Plainfield, passed away on May 3, at Columbus Hospital, Newark, NJ.
Emily was born in 1931 in Cagayan De Oro, Philippines, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Silliman University, Dumaguete City, Philippines in 1951. She taught home economics and nutrition in the Philippines and Nigeria. In a career shift, she worked as a caregiver for elderly women until her retirement in 2012.
Emily loved good food and socializing. She was a devoted and lifelong member of the Times Square Church in New York City. While she lived in Elizabeth, her routine for almost 40 years started with preparing meals on Saturday to share with her fellow church members on Sundays. Each Sunday morning at 6:00 AM sharp, she would take the bus to the Elizabeth train station for her trip to New York City. She attended all three services at her church each Sunday, arriving home late in the evening. Her life revolved around her church.
She is survived by her two sisters, Archimeda and Norma, several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Friday, May 11, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Somerville Funeral Home, located at 10 West End Avenue, Somerville, NJ 08876.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 am Saturday May 12, at Immaculate Conception Church, 35 Mountain Avenue, Somerville, NJ 08876. Burial will be private.
